The Division of Infectious Diseases is pleased to announce the nomination of a new Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiative Director: Johan H. Melendez, PhD, MS.
Dr. Melendez is an Assistant Professor in ID. His research combines molecular strategies, clinical, behavioral, microbiological, and genomics to conduct basic and translational research aimed at characterizing pathogens causing sexually transmitted infections, especially understanding the emergence of and mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance. Additionally, he is involved in the development of novel molecular approaches to rapidly characterize antimicrobial resistance with the goal of improving antimicrobial stewardship. Prior to joining the faculty in 2020, Dr. Melendez completed a three-year post-doctoral fellowship in ID at Johns Hopkins.
He has served in a variety of roles in DEI initiatives aimed at supporting and promoting historically underrepresented trainees in the sciences and medicine. As the DEI Initiative Director for ID, Dr. Melendez hopes to develop programs to enhance the diversity and inclusivity of our division.
Many thanks to Dr. Risha Irvin, who is stepping down from this position after serving for the past year, for her tremendous leadership and guidance. As Vice Chair for Diversity, Inclusion, and Health Equity in the Department of Medicine, Dr. Irvin will provide support to Dr. Melendez as he takes on this new role.
