TOID Research: HOPE in Action Study

Faculty co-investigators Christine Durand, MD (Assistant Professor, Infectious Diseases), Dorry Segev, MD, PhD (Professor, Transplant Surgery), and Aaron Tobian, MD, PhD (Professor of Pathology, Transfusion Medicine) oversee the NIAID, HOPE in Action liver and kidney (HIV-to-HIV) Transplant study.  The multicenter research protocol expands the donor pool by allowing HIV+ organ transplants for HIV+ recipients.

Christine Durand, MD

Christine Durand, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine and Oncology, received her MD from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.  This was followed by completion of a residency and Infectious diseases Fellowship at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Dr. Durand is a member of the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center and is involved in clinical and translational research focused on individuals infected with HIV and hepatitis C virus who require cancer and transplant therapies.  Her current research efforts include looking at outcomes of hepatitis C treatment after solid organ transplant, the potential use of organs from HIV-infected donors for HIV-infected solid organ transplant candidates, and HIV cure strategies including bone marrow transplantation.

Dr. Durand is supported by multiple grants: R01 from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) to study HIV-to-HIV organ transplantation in the US; K23 from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to study antiretroviral therapy during bone marrow transplant in HIV-1 infection; U01 from the NIAID to study HIV-to-HIV deceased donor kidney transplantation. Dorry Segev, MD, PhD

Dorry Segev, MD, PhD, Professor of Transplant Surgery, is an abdominal transplant surgeon focusing on minimally invasive live donor surgery and incompatible organ transplantation.  His research uses advances statistical methods for mathematical modeling and simulation of medical data, analysis of large healthcare datasets, and outcomes research.  He received his MD from Johns Hopkins University school of Medicine in 1996, followed by a surgical residency at Johns Hopkins in 2004.  Segev Research Dashboard and Publications

Aaron Tobian, MD, PhD

Aaron Tobian, MD, PhD is a Professor of Pathology, Medicine, Oncology, and Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of medicine and Bloomberg School of Public Health.  He is also Director of Transfusion Medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital.  Dr. Tobian has an established global research program that studies HIV and other adverse events associated with transfusion.  He has authored more than 170 peer-reviewed journal articles.

Dr. Tobian received his MD and PhD at Case Western Reserve University and conducted a clinical pathology residency and transfusion medicine fellowship at Johns Hopkins University.  He is board certified in clinical pathology and blood banking /transfusion medicine.
